Signing the PTA attendance register gave a measure of illiteracy
rates, with over 80% using a thumb print. Names of children enrolled but
dropping out of school were taken and government promises of future financial
grant, once children were back in school, for the necessary uniforms, exercise
books and pens were explained. Parents went on to discuss a levy to set to
raise funds for school desks for a classroom, with the meeting allowing for
full exchange of views. Older teenagers
asked CamFed if they could come back into school, the answer sadly being No. Fathers
and mothers nursing young children looked either very young, or very old, as
though life quickly wore them out.
